New Orleans native John “Papa” Gros ( grow) Led the hugely successful hugely FUNKY "Papa Grows Funk" for 13 years thru 6 PGF albums before morphing into this format that is just as groovy but more lyrical. He has lived 30 years behind the B3 championing the music of the Big Easy and a much sought after guest / contributor to the hitmakers of today.
His 2nd solo album, last year's River’s on Fire, mixes the sounds of rock & roll, funk and rootsy Americana into a genre-bending gumbo that carries on the tradition of New Orleans, both honoring its past and helping to shape its future.
Throughout his career, Gros has been a bandleader, A sideman. A singer. An instrumentalist. and in his current resurgence his role may be different, but the goal remains the same: to honor the music he’s been living his whole life, and to add his own page to the NOLA history book.
Gros muses. “Urban Dictionary defines “Fire” as someone doing something great that is unstoppable. I hope Toussaint is smiling down on me, urging me forward.”
13 years and 6 albums of Booty shaking party music best sums up the inimitable Papa Grows Funk, one of the most successful funk bands to emanate from New Orleans. Rooted in improvisation, the group of all-star musicians led by Hammond B3 keyboardist and lead vocalist, John Gros, built its enthusiastic vibe on a long-standing musical tradition that dates back to the hot jazz of the legends. Like Dr. John and the Neville Brothers, Papa Grows Funk keeps that New Orleans lineage alive while always funkifying towards the future.
WASTED POTENTIAL BRASS BAND ;
Locally grown, New Orleans influenced, WPBB is Atlanta's pop up party starter. Powered by tuba goodness and the perfect PAPA appetizer they just released a new album "Low Bar." The name Wasted Potential for this band is the definition of irony. The tracks 404 town and Keep Up, the two bonuses on Low Bar, do not disappoint. They feature heavy brass and the real gem, the rhythm section. WPBB is a favorite at bars, festivals, parties, and the streets of Atlanta.
