Music at the Mikvah

Join friends of AJMF (Atlanta Jewish Music Festival) and MACoM (Metro Atlanta Community Mikvah) for a unique performance and lecture by Jaffa Road's founding musical leaders Aviva Chernick and Aaron Lightstone. Their music will be inspired by Atlanta's mikvah and the practice of immersion.

Aviva Chernick:

Those who have experienced Aviva Chernick's intoxicatingly soulful vocals never forget where they heard them first.

Aviva has garnered critical acclaim and a devoted following as the charismatic lead singer of the twice JUNO-nominated group Jaffa Road. With her eponymous solo project she has revealed stunning range in her musical persona. Inspired by her work as a prayer leader/Ba’alat Tefilah, and by her study of the Balkan Judeo-Spanish tradition under the tutelage of the legendary Flory Jagoda, Aviva has crafted a new sound defined by her distinctive vocal presence. Her first solo CD release was nominated for a 2013 Canadian Folk Music Award.

Aaron Lighstone:

Aaron is a performer on oud and guitar, a music therapist, and ethnomusicologist.   As a young teen he discovered old recordings of country blues artists from the African-American South this triggered a life long fascination with the music of many different cultures.   Along with his bandmates in the award-winning group Jaffa Road, he has toured coast to coast to coast play at numerous music festivals in Canada, California, Alaska, Brazil (and Georgia).  Jaffa Road has been nominated for two Juno awards (2010 and 2013), won World Music Group of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards (2013) and has won other awards such as the John Lennon Song Writing Contest, the Toronto Independent Music Awards and Folk Music Ontario's "Songs from the Heart" songwriting contest.  Aaron and the members of Jaffa Road were a headlining act at AJMF2 (May 2011) and are thrilled to return.
